001: Family Travel Video Blog – Plans for a World Sailing Adventure with the Kids

I’m Renx and this is my first blog (or vlog!) to document my dream of buying a boat and go sailing around the world with my husband and three kids. There’s a lot preparation involved and no template to follow, so I’ll be vlogging everything from buying the boat and decluttering the house, to home education and off grid living. Although my two greatest loves in life are ocean sailing and my family, I’m under no delusion that combining the two will not be all plain sailing – but as with everything in life – I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.

TRANSCRIPT:

So we’ve got some adventures planned and we want to keep a record of what we’re going to do. And that’s why we’re vlogging it rather than blogging it, because vlogging is supposed to be the ‘in’ thing.

OK, so our adventure that we’re planning, is to go sailing with the kids. Maybe we’ll go all the way around the world. Maybe we won’t. I think I remember talking about it over ten years ago, maybe fifteen years ago about doing it.

So, I’m going to be doing blogs on this whole process. Some blogs on finding a boat, then maybe something on home education, because we’ll be having to home school the kids – and maybe on planning the route as well – what route we might take. There’s going to be some on concentrating on how you de-clutter and clear your house out. There’ll be some on the kind of work that I do. Lifeboat crew – that’s voluntary – so I’m sort of stand-by lifeboat crew when I’m working, doing stuff around the house. I work down the marina on yachts down there. I help out my husband on his business. Yeah, he made this whole kitchen! Kind’ve like team work effort on everything really. Then by three o’clock its time to go and pick the kids up. So then it’s all kids then I do stuff for myself in the evening as well. So the way that we’re going to pay for this trip or these travels is from renting out our house.

I love travelling. I love seeing new places. I think if we’re careful, we’ll be able to afford it. We won’t be having any bills because hopefully we’ll have solar power; we’ll have wind power. We won’t be paying any rent, we’ll be anchored out most of the time. We won’t have to worry about clothes so much.

So there’s been a lot of preparation for this trip and it starts with trying to clear a whole house. Ebay, Gumtree car boot sales, boat jumbles. Some of it given away and some of it going into storage.

Yeah, so getting the kids ready for it is another thing in itself. Getting vaccinations, medical insurance, tips on alternative medicines. Also making sure that our first-aid is up to date.

Quite a few people probably think its a really bad thing to do for your children , to take them out of the security of the house and a school. You could get illnesses, you can meet pirates. On one hand it’ll be really great, because we’ll be with the kids all day and every day and that’s a fantastic thing to do while the kids are young. But on the flip side it could be quite difficult teaching children age five, eight and eleven by then. Making sure that they’re not behind all the other kids and that they’re enjoying it.

I do take them down to a sailing club where they’re learning to sail little boats themselves which gets them into that idea. They seem quite excited. They don’t seem to mind the unknown as much as adults. I think kids are quite adaptable..
