Mocking Up Our Raised Helm – Part 1 (MJ Sailing – Ep 314)

We’ve been given the freedom to move onto more interesting projects – and now we can begin the steps for our raised helm!

We have some more new and interesting boat work for you this week! Since the cabin top and support beams have been bonded in, Matt has been released to begin work on our raised helm. The only thing is, we’ve basically been given a free license on how we want this done, and we’re a little overwhelmed with options.

From how the catamaran was originally designed (and cabin top molded for); to a strange set up we saw on an HH which would allow us more sitting room, and finally something that would probably benefit our aging knees, we think that bringing the helm all the way forward to the bulkhead will be our best option.

Still keeping room for a small cabinet at the forward edge of the cockpit, we measure out the space and Matt cuts out the forward cockpit seat. We glue together a few pieces of 1/4″ plywood as a template, and then bring that down to a larger sheet to trace and cut.

After Matt kept working through the night when I’d left with the camera to edit, he managed to make a mock space for the cabinet and steps. After a few test to make sure they’re wide enough and not too steep, we’re happy with the setup!

Stay tuned for part two next week where we begin to cut down the pedestal sent to us by Max Cruise and make it fit our new idea of keeping as much visibility through our window as possible.

We hope you enjoy!
