Are We CRAZY For USING Our Oven Inside a Cabinet?? (MJ Sailing - Ep 304)

It’s not uncommon to store a convection oven inside a cabinet – but what about COOKING in there??

We decided to find out as we built a custom cabinet in our galley to use and store our convection oven.

Since we now have in hand most of the items which we’ll be installing into the galley, we can build the bulkheads, cupboards, and shelves around these items.

Of course two of the MAJOR items that will get an install are our refrigerator and freezer. And although they’re not ready to go in just yet, we do have them in hand and can build the spaces in around them. Our fridge is a 5.1 cf space which will take up the forward edge of the inboard side. Our freezer however, is a little different. It is not a drawer, but a top loading unit – although we will not be accessing it from our counter. Instead we’ll be pulling it out on a drawer near the floor space of this area.

On the outboard side, we layout where the sink, trash, and dishwasher will be – although a big focus this week is on our convection oven. Instead of keeping ours on the counter top, or even bringing it from a cabinet to the counter when we want to use it, we plan to keep it permanently within a cupboard, even while it is cooking our food. But can that space stand the heat?

To make sure that in fact will not cause issues for us, not only have we cut out a space for a fan which will automatically turn on in this space when the temperature rises – but we want to test that it’s still safe even if the vent were to fail.

We’re not worried about a fire starting in this area, but we do have concerns of the foam going wonky in high temps. To make sure it never gets that hot though, we performed a test of the oven running at 425 for 30 minutes to see how hot the area would get.

Are we still within the safety zone? Tune in to our newest episode to find out.

Enjoy!!
