Ep 397 | LOCKS, LAKES and Winter Days, The Netherlands, European Vacation
Winter on the Dutch waterways has its own kind of magic. In this episode we wander through the historic streets of Middelburg, then slip back into the quiet lake and canal system where the world feels still and the traffic disappears. There is no one around. It’s winter and everything is calm on the water.
We tie up at a remote island with not another boat in sight, explore on foot, follow mysterious mole tunnels, and enjoy the kind of peaceful cruising you only get in the colder months. From there we continue through a series of deep locks and high bridges before arriving in Willemstad, a fortified star‑shaped city that looks like something from a storybook.
And yes, the charcoal saga continues. The quest to fire up the Valkry BBQ rolls on as we discover that winter grilling simply isn’t a thing here. But we will not give up. Finally, we are successful!
