Is This ABANDONED DREAM Yacht Worth It? [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

Let me be clear. I LOVE Lyle Hess boats, and the Bristol Channel Cutter is one of my favorite designs by him. This vessel, Sun Star, is a 1979 Bristol Channel Cutter that has been abandoned for a long time in a small boatyard in Florida. Normally, these boats are worth between 50,000 to 100,000 dollars depending on condition, so would it be worth it to restore this abandoned boat to her former glory? I think so, but only for the right person willing and able to put in the work. Personally, I think the right person needs to come by, truck the boat to their own property, and work on it as a passion project. Unfortunately, that’s not us right now (though we did think about it!).

What do you think? Is she a diamond in the rough or a wreck only worth the money you’ll get from scrapping her? Leave a comment below!

*Before you judge the asking price, please do your research on Lyle Hess Bristol Channel Cutters and look at what they go for in varying conditions. You can’t compare a BCC to a Catalina 30. It’s apples and oranges. Yes, the price is probably too high, but that’s also the price with the new engine. Keep in mind that used monohull sailboats almost never sell for the asking price and that the seller is very willing to negotiate. I think he’ll consider any reasonable offers, so you might get this boat for much less then 35k without the engine.*

Asking Price: $35,000 including new Yanmar diesel, but willing to negotiate

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20’s, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we’re in our 30’s. We’re not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O’day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.
