We removed our 2004 Westerbeke diesel in preparation to install an electric motor powered by marine-grade lithium batteries. Removing the diesel was a filthy job. We pretty much got covered in oil and diesel during the process. We’re super excited for it to be OUT of the boat so we can get to cleaning and painting.
Our end goal for this boat is to be completely off the grid. Sure, going completely electric will be better for the environment, and that’s a plus, but that’s not the biggest reason we’re doing this. We’re doing this because we love simplicity, and an electric motor is the simplest and purest form of auxiliary propulsion for a sailboat in our minds. Getting rid of the need to fill diesel jerry cans, the need to constantly service and maintain the engine, and the need to constantly search for more propane for your stove, is the real reason.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that electric is better for everyone, because it’s certainly not. But for us, going electric was a no-brainer.
More information about our electric sailboat build coming shortly. Stay tuned!
