All cat sailors should know this!
This short video filmed in portrait will explain what is meant by apparent wind.
When we are sailing we are using a combination of two different winds
The true wind – this is the wind that we feel if we stand still in one position – the wind that is blowing.
The induced wind – the wind that we create by moving forward – on a fast boat this can be extremely significant especially on a reaching course.
The AW is the combination of the two.
The best example of using AW is on a broad reach on a catamaran where the true wind is from behind, the induced wind is from ahead which puts our AW on 90 degrees.
With a spinnaker the effect is even greater
This is why, when you see fast boats sailing downwind or reaching their sails are in almost as much as on the upwind course.
There we go.
