Taipan 4.9 Catamaran – Class Explained | Australia’s Ultimate 16-Foot Racing Cat
The Taipan 4.9 is one of Australia’s most successful and enduring high-performance beach catamarans, with a reputation for speed, balance, and long-term competitiveness.
Before we go any further, here’s who the boat is ideally suited for:
Taipan 4.9 Cat Rig (solo): ideal helm weight 75–85 kg
Taipan 4.9 Sloop Rig (two-up): ideal combined crew weight 120–140 kg
That versatility — being genuinely competitive both solo and double-handed — is a huge part of what makes the Taipan 4.9 so special.
Designed by Greg Goodall and Jim Boyer and first launched in 1988, the Taipan 4.9 was created as a step up from boats like the Mosquito, offering more power, more speed, and better balance without becoming overly complex. The platform borrowed construction and design cues from the Tornado, while the rig — ahead of its time — featured a square-top mainsail inspired by A-Class catamarans, delivering performance without being unnecessarily complicated.
Available as both a cat rig and a sloop rig, the Taipan 4.9 has built a reputation as a boat you can grow with. It’s forgiving enough to learn, fast enough to win races, and still competitive decades after it was first launched. Many national championships are still being won by boats built in the 1990s — a rare thing in high-performance sailing.
In this video, I cover:
What the Taipan 4.9 really is
Cat rig vs sloop rig — and which one suits you
How it sails across a wide wind range
Who the boat is ideal for
Why the class remains so strong today
What Taipan 4.9s cost on the used market
With an active class association, strong fleets around Australia, and exceptional resale value, the Taipan 4.9 isn’t just a great racing cat — it’s a boat people buy, keep, and genuinely love sailing.
