The Pitchpole is everyone’s favourite type of capsize for a catamaran.

When you overload the bows of the boat, either from crew weight too far forward, too much power in the rig or turning downwind without easing sail, the bows of the boat are forced under the water which can cause the boat to flip.
This is a type of capsize called the pitchpole.

When the bows go in, the boat suddenly slows which can send the sailors flying forward which them in deeper, making for a more impressive capsize.

The pitchpole is one of the key special moves of the small catamaran sailor.
The first pitchpole is a right of passage for any cat sailor and has to be done at some point.

The amount of volume in the bows of the cat will determine how prone it is to pitchpoling.
