Can You REALLY Sail a Tornado Catamaran Solo

Can you REALLY sail a Tornado catamaran solo?

I took my 25-year-old Tornado out single-handed in lighter winds to find out just how practical — and how much fun — this legendary 20ft catamaran is with only one sailor onboard.

Getting a Tornado onto the water for solo sailing presents a few practical challenges, so I start by looking at the launch and how I deal with them. Once underway, it's time to find out what the boat can really do.

I sail upwind from the trapeze, try handling the Tornado's spinnaker single-handed and finish with a high-speed run reaching 20 knots.

The biggest surprise was just how stable and manageable the Tornado felt. That huge platform could actually make it a fantastic boat for learning to helm from the trapeze, and for sailors based somewhere with predominantly lighter winds, solo Tornado sailing might make a lot more sense than you'd expect.

A 20ft Olympic racing catamaran as a solo sailing boat?

Maybe it's not such a crazy idea after all.
