The cause and effect of badly tuned rudders on your boatspeed

Boat speed enthusiasts often overlook the importance of correctly adjusted rudders. However, improperly set rudders can significantly hamper performance. Joe from Joy Rider TV explains the cause and effect of bad rudder setup during a Hobe 16 sailing session in this informative video.

Imperfect Rudder Set-Up

In perfect sailing conditions, with wind speeds reaching around 25 knots, the Hobe 16 should deliver a thrilling experience. However, on this occasion, Phil and Joe encountered two critical issues with the boat’s rudders that affected their performance.

Unsettled Rudder Position

The first issue was related to the port-side rudder, which was set at a wrong rake. As the boat sped up, the rudder came back half an inch more than necessary at the stock, amplifying its effect down the length of the blade.

Play in Rudder Movement

The second problem identified was excessive sideways play in both rudders. With around an inch of lateral movement, the play would lead to Rudder stall at speed.

Rudder Stall Explained

When sailing fast and facing sideways pressure, a rudder can experience stalling. Essentially, an air pocket forms around the blade, leading to a loss of grip at the back of the boat. The result is similar to having the brakes suddenly applied and poor steering control.

Worn Rudder Stocks

In this particular case, both rudder stocks were significantly worn. The cam pins holes displayed wear that compromised their integrity and the boat’s overall performance.

Rudder Upgrades Required

Given their age (around 10 years old), Phil and Joe agreed that the rudders needed an upgrade. Although not elderly by standard terms, constant exposure to heavy wind had accelerated wear, necessitating replacement parts.

Installation of New Rudder Stocks

The solution lay in installing new rudder stocks and adjusting the setup to improve performance. During the episode, they managed to replace the worn parts with newer ones, successfully addressing the issues.

Testing New Rudder Setup

To test their adjustments, Phil and Joe ventured out for another sail on the Hobe 16. The improved rudder setup yielded significant enhancements in boat speed and handling.

Final Thoughts

As this sailing session with Phil and Joe on the Hobe 16 reveals, ensuring that your rudders are correctly adjusted is crucial for boat speed and overall performance. Pay close attention to rake angle, play in the movement, and wear on parts. By upgrading worn components and making necessary adjustments, you can enhance your boating experience and avoid Rudder stall at speed.
