Safely Change Rig Tension on a Catamaran

Safely Change Rig Tension on a Catamaran Without Assistance

In today’s episode, we’ll dive into a useful technique for adjusting the rig tension on your catamaran without needing an extra pair of hands. It may seem challenging to change shroud settings by yourself, but worry not! With a simple and efficient method, you can ensure the process is done safely.

Why Adjust Rig Tension?

Optimizing your catamaran’s rig tension is essential for maintaining its performance, efficiency, and overall sailing experience. The ideal amount of mast rake will vary depending on the conditions you’re sailing in, such as wind strength, hull design, and sail type. Making minor adjustments can lead to significant improvements in speed, handling, and stability.

What You’ll Need

To execute this technique successfully, you’ll need:

  • A second clevis pin,
  • Split ring,

Making sure you have these tools on hand will allow you to swiftly proceed with the adjustment.

The Trick: Adjusting Shroud Settings Without Assistance

Follow these steps to safely change rig tension by yourself:

  1. Raise the shroud cover.
  2. Identify the clevis pin in your current position and locate the next hole you wish to move up. In this case, we’ll loosen it by one hole.
  3. Place a second clevis pin through the split ring, going through the middle of the eye in the shroud.
  4. Gently pull down on the shroud while simultaneously lifting upward to slide out the lower clevis pin from its position. You may need some force depending on the tension on your rig. Ensure that you maintain control and steady movements throughout this process to avoid any accidents or damage to your boat’s components.
  5. Once both pins have been successfully removed, you can then reinsert the new second clevis pin into its desired hole.

If you wish to tighten the rig tension instead of loosening it, reverse the steps in this process.

The Best Mast Rake for Your Catamaran

It’s crucial to determine how much mast rake your catamaran should have to maintain an efficient sail plan. Consult other resources, like videos or articles, to educate yourself on finding the right rig tension for various conditions and hull designs.

Final Thoughts

This trick provides a quick and safe way of adjusting your catamaran’s shroud settings when you’re without an assistant. Proper maintenance is essential in ensuring the longevity, performance, and efficiency of your sailboat.
