Racing the Tornado – Light Wind

It’s Joe from JoyRider TV here, and today we are bringing you some exciting footage from a light wind racing day in Vassiliki Bay, Greece. This is part of Wildwind Race Day, where sailors gather to race their catamarans. In this video, we are out on board Bad Boy 94, introducing our new crew, Ben, who will be joining us for the upcoming Tornado World Championships.

Racing Strategy

The strategy in Vassiliki Bay, particularly when sailing with an onshore wind, is fairly simple. The wind is generally better to the left, but it can go a bit light if you try going right. Ben, who has recently taken over as crew from JoJo and managed some time at Wildwind for work experience years ago, explains that we need to beat the Hobie Tigers by 6% or 3 minutes in a typical race duration.

The Tornado Catamarans

This exciting race sees a mixed fleet of Tornado catamarans competing against the Hobie Tigers, making for an interesting and fast-paced match. In this instance, we’re also using it as an opportunity to test out our gear ahead of the World Championships.

The Course

In this light wind scenario, you can see that we’re tacking very close to the boat and managing the jib throughout the race. Our goal is always to be as efficient as possible while navigating the challenging winds.

Jibe Technique

The Jibe is crucial in maintaining speed and overall boat performance. Here, we are seen practicing our Jibes while ensuring a smooth transition from one direction to the next.

Drop Technique

In this video, we’re also showcasing our drop technique. When sailing in these conditions, it’s essential to ensure that the process is as smooth and efficient as possible, so we’re sharing a few tips on how best to handle it.
