This is the most important thing to know if you are going to be sailing a boat.
These are the directions that we can sail in, in relation to the direction of the wind
We can’t sail directly into the wind – called head to wind
Instead, if we want to go in that direction we zig zag on what is called an upwind course.
This is also known as sailing close hauled or beating.
To turn from one zig to the other zag is called tacking or going about.
Straight with the wind is called running – not a very fast way to sail on a modern boat or catamaran.
All other directions are called reaching.
Close reach
Beam reach
and the Broad reach- we use to get downwind in a series of zig zags. Turning between by Gybing
