Make Sheeting in SO MUCH EASIER: Sailboat Problem Solved
May 23, 2024 by Joseph Bennett | Language: EN Play Time: 00:05:42 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

In this latest video from Joy Rider TV, boat enthusiast and seasoned sailor Joe tackles a common issue he’s encountered when trying to sheet in his sailboat’s main sail – especially when sailing against the wind. Although he typically enjoys handling the main sheet himself as the helmsman, it appears that his approach might need some improvement.
Initial Challenges
Joe realized he needed to increase the purchase of his main sheet system from 8:1 to a more significant 12:1. Despite these efforts, he discovered that the increased load felt no easier.
The Eureka Moment
A few months prior, Joe had tried using a different main sheet on his new sailboat, the 16-foot one. He hoped to avoid previous challenges faced with the Tornado’s main sheet by simply moving the rope to this new boat.
However, upon testing it on both boats, he encountered an even higher load than before. Joe finally concluded that the issue was not rooted in his purchase but rather in the rope itself!
Rope Revamp
The previously used 8mm maialli swift cord served as Joe’s go-to rope due to its lightweight, non-stretching, and bendy qualities. But recognizing that it wasn’t meeting his needs anymore, he decided on a total switch for an entirely different rope.
Introducing the Magic Rope
After rummaging through his memories of previous sailing experiences, he recalled using a specific type of rope that had once made sheeting in an absolute breeze – Marlow XL Taper. Its flexible and grip-tastic properties quickly became apparent to Joe.
Revised System Configuration
To facilitate this new rope’s integration, Joe meticulously revised his main sheet system. He started by utilizing a Harken triple-bottom block with switchable ratchet and stainless-steel becket.
Following up with a bull-bearing block placed on the becket in front, he proceeded to attach a four-way block at the top. This arrangement allows for a 9:1 purchase rate effectively and efficiently, ensuring Joe’s sheeting needs are met without further issues.
Sheet In EASIER
In his detailed tutorial, Joe demonstrates the proper sequence of block arrangement to achieve the desired 9:1 purchase ratio. He meticulously goes through each step to guarantee an easy-to-follow process.
It appears that increasing the purchase wasn’t necessary at all. Instead, replacing the old rope with a more robust and grippy alternative significantly eased sheeting in!
Final Thoughts
The video ends on an exciting note, leaving viewers pondering the possibility of revisiting their current main sheets and potentially discovering a similar solution to improve their own sailing experience.
So, if you find yourself grappling with sheeting in difficulties like Joe did, perhaps consider trying out alternative ropes and configurations tailored to your boat’s specifications. Your sailboat adventures will undoubtedly thank you for the effort!
