I Sailed into a Cave – On an Inflatable Catamaran

In this exhilarating episode, I embarked on a one-of-a-kind adventure sailing into the famed Cave of Papa Nicolas on the island of Meganissi using a mini inflatable catamaran. If you’re new to JoyRiderTV, let me tell you that the excitement was through the roof! The journey started with a short drive down to Half Moon Beach, located on the east coast of the beautiful Lesvos Island. The car, cradling my trusty 4-meter inflatable catamaran, the Mini Cat 420 Evolve, stood tall amidst the excitement. The Mini Cat, with its carbon bow sprit and runner blade, is designed to sail smoothly through various wind conditions. On that sunny morning at around 8 AM, I set off under a mix of enthusiasm and caution. A Bumpy Start The assembly process proved more challenging than anticipated due to some issues with the pump valves. Despite these initial hiccups, I managed to set sail just as the wind started picking up, achieving a boat speed of around 4 knots – a promising start to what promised to be an adventurous day. The Adventure Begins The first stop was Half Moon Beach, where I tested the waters before embarking on my voyage to the Cave of Papa Nicolas. The mini catamaran offered an exciting and manageable challenge – not too fast, yet thrilling enough to keep the adrenaline pumping. As I sailed across channels and around boats, a thought kept me focused: it wouldn’t have been feasible with larger boats or even faster sailboats. Paddle Assistance Once on the water, the mini catamaran handled the sea well, with occasional paddle assistance when needed. The wind conditions changed frequently, ranging from almost no wind to strong headwinds near the cave entrance. Inside the Cave of Papa Nicolas The moment of truth arrived as I sailed close to what seemed like the massive Aroui Island. The cave entrance revealed itself, and a decision loomed – full power or sail cautiously with an option to drop the main for easier navigation. Thrilling Entrance The cave proved as breathtaking as anticipated, and entering it in my mini inflatable catamaran made for an incredible moment. Maneuvering through the entrance and deep inside the cave felt exhilarating yet controlled – a unique adventure I’ll never forget. The Exit Challenge Paddling back out was perhaps less enjoyable but essential. Navigating the rocky terrain and managing boat control without a functioning wind proved challenging. Despite these difficulties, my mini catamaran managed well with consistent paddle power until the wind returned. The Journey Back The journey back to Half Moon Beach presented another test, but this time with lighter winds. I decided on a relaxed approach, not only for comfort but also because the adventure called for it. Conclusion This extraordinary experience sailing into the Cave of Papa Nicolas aboard a mini inflatable catamaran was filled with adventure, thrill, and a bit of challenge. With no previous practice, I found myself learning valuable lessons about boat handling, wind conditions, and maintaining a good stance while paddling. Reflections on the Voyage The journey took approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes, covering a distance of around 18 km. While it was physically demanding at times – especially during the exit paddle back out to open sea – the experience was rewarding on many levels. The excitement, adrenaline rush, and sense of accomplishment are memories that will remain with me for years to come. For more exciting adventures, follow JoyRiderTV. For those considering their first or next inflatable catamaran journey, remember to pack a waterproof camera, sunscreen, and perhaps some extra paddle practice.
Probably one of the most extreme challenges that i've taken on.
Sailing from Half Moon Beach, near to Nidri, Lefkada to the Cave of Papanikolas on the Island of Kefalonia.
