How to sail a catamaran solo in around 14 knots — focusing on upwind technique and control.
In this video we break solo sailing down into three clear levels, showing how to handle increasing power step by step while staying in control. This is not about sending it flat out—it’s about understanding what the boat is doing and managing it confidently when you’re on your own.
Filmed on a Hobie 16 in moderate breeze, this session covers the full process from leaving the beach through to sailing upwind and returning safely.
What’s included:
Solo beach launch with hazard awareness
Managing the boat with one rudder down
Depowering setup for controlled upwind sailing
The “half hove-to” position for stability
Fixing an inverted rudder cam on the water
Static 3-point turn (low-speed manoeuvre)
Three levels of solo sailing: seated, half trapeze, full trapeze
Controlled solo tacking technique
Returning to shore without damage (rudderless landing)
This is aimed at sailors who are already comfortable on a catamaran and want to step into slightly stronger wind while sailing alone, without things getting out of hand.
