How fast is the Hobie 15 catamaran

How Fast is the Hobie 15 Catamaran?

In this episode, we dive into the thrilling world of the Hobie 15 catamaran and put its speed to the test. This small but mighty boat has intrigued sailors and watersports enthusiasts alike, so we wanted to see just how quick it can go with the main sail and jib.

A Brief Introduction to Hobie 15

The Hobie 15 catamaran is a compact and agile sailing craft designed for teaching, family use, or even as part of watersports adventure tourism. At just 15 feet long and around 2.3 feet wide, it’s small enough to be accessible yet spirited enough to get the adrenaline pumping.

Initial Test with Main Sail

To start our speed test, we initially set off using only the main sail. We soon discovered that its 15ft length makes it quite pitchpole-prone compared to the Hobie 16 due to its shorter hulls and less control over the sail shape.

The Traveler Adjustment

Our initial foray into sailing the Hobie 15 proved challenging, with a noticeable lack of main sheet leading to a rather tricky sailing experience. However, adjustments made with the traveler helped improve sail shape.

A Closer Look at Features

One of the unique features highlighted during this test is the Hobie 15’s lexan rudder blades, which make quite a moaning sound as they maneuver through the water. Additionally, the lack of an adjustable traveler adds to the sailing challenge but allows for experimentation.

Adding the Jib

With a strop added to alleviate issues with the short main sheet, we then experimented with adding the jib for an even more thrilling ride. The smaller size of the jib prevents it from pulling us over as easily compared to larger boats.

Performance and Speed

The Hobie 15 catamaran certainly packs a punch. With both main sail and jib up, it feels incredibly fast – reaching speeds that might just impress even seasoned sailors. The noise generated by the rudder blades is a good gauge of speed, adding to the overall excitement.

Conclusion

The Hobie 15 catamaran truly delivers an alien sailing experience that is both exhilarating and challenging. Despite its small size, it packs a lot of punch and proved to be incredibly responsive on the water. Whether you’re learning to sail, teaching others, or just looking for a thrilling adventure, the Hobie 15 offers an unforgettable ride.

Strong wind RUDDERLESS: Is it possible on a Hobie 16?
I knew that this was going to be hard to do, if even possible. Certainly much easier on boats with either a daggerboard or on boats that have a very large jib (like the Hobie 18 or 20) Support Joyrider TV ⛵️Channel Membership https://www.youtube.co...
