Join me at the US Multihull Championships for the Hobie Alter Cup, where I talk with top sailor Tyler Myers to break down how to get the absolute most out of the deceptively simple Hobie Wave (Formula Wave).

The Wave is a one-design, no-nonsense catamaran — but there’s still a huge amount of performance to unlock if you know what to look for. Tyler shares his expert insights on rig setup, mast rake, sail shape, sailing modes, and the subtle adjustments that separate the front of the fleet from everyone else.
✅ Glossary
Pocket (in relation to mainsail depth)
The curved “belly” or depth of the sail. More pocket = more power in light wind; less pocket = flatter, more controllable sail in strong wind.
Leech
The back edge of the sail, running from the head (top) to the clew (aft lower corner). Controls twist and power.
Luff
The front edge of the sail, the part closest to the mast. Where you apply cunningham tension.
Foot
The bottom edge of the sail, running along the boom (or boomless line on the Wave) from tack to clew.
Clew
The back lower corner of the sail where the mainsheet and outhaul area attach.
Leech telltales
Small pieces of yarn or tape on the leech showing airflow. If they stall or hide behind the sail, the leech is too tight.
Mast rake
The angle the mast leans aft. More rake = more upwind pointing and depower; less rake = more power.
Tapered battens
Battens that are thicker at one end, giving the leech support while still allowing the sail to twist. Used to fine-tune sail shape.
Cunningham
A downhaul line used to pull the luff tight. This reduces pocket depth and opens the leech. On the Wave, very light use.
Chainplate / stay adjuster
Stainless steel plate with multiple holes allowing the sidestays to be adjusted for mast rake.
Slop stopper / flopper stopper
A simple tie-down used from the bridle wires or forestay to remove play (“slop”) in the rig. Keeps everything tighter – generally used for downwind.
