IS ROAD TO GOLD THE BEST ONLINE COURSE FOR SAILBOAT RACING?

Since starting the course I only attended the one event – The Tornado Worlds in Thessaloniki, Greece.
We got a bad result at the event.
This proved many things that we learnt on the course:

1: choose the right class for the crew – our team weight was 180 kg – at an event with very little wind we really couldn’t match the lighter teams – they were trapezing, lifting the hull while we were still very much inboard.

2:on arrival at event spend as much time as possible getting info and learning about the conditions at the venue.
The wind was light and shifting regularly – the local teams were spotting the shifts immediately – we really should have talked to them to find out – especially in the Tornado class where everyone is so eager to share their knowledge.

3:go out and train with other boats – this would have made a huge difference as we are the only Tornado at my usual sailing venue. I train with the GPS for speed but it’s no substitute for the real thing.

4:check that the boat is set up correctly, calibrate everything – we did that and at least we didn’t have to worry about the boat.

5:we did starting drills prior to the event with a mixed catamaran fleet – this really helped, our starts went from maybe 50% successful to 80% where we were getting off the line in a favourable position.

6:finish road to gold before going to the event – I only got as far as the chapter on Tactics – i’m sure that the later chapters would have proved valuable.
