Lucky Stop on Ieshima Island #sailing #japan #adventure

Hi, Lowell here of Pacific Solo and the Never Too Late Academy speaking to you from Ieshima, a small island off the west coast of Okinawa, near Motobu and Nago. We pulled in here unexpectedly. I would sail overnight to Amami, but I wanted to see as many islands as possible. I've been to 70 ports so far, so in discussion with Ian, we decided to pull in for the night. I'm happy I did because within hours, I came down with severe symptoms of what I think is norovirus. My doctor confirmed that by talking to him. I slept on the dock. The boat was thrown around violently with southern winds from an exposed docking place. Ian stays inside bravely. I'm in recovery mode now, waiting for the weather to clear to continue the journey north to chase the cherry blossoms and sail beyond the blue zone. Already learning lots about this next season of my life. I turn 70 in three weeks.

The Hidden Cost of the Nuclear Family

More than a century ago, writer Lafcadio Hearn observed that Japan viewed life, family, and community differently from the modern West. Less linear. More circular. After years traveling through Japan’s longevity hotspots, I increasingly wonder whether o...
