Loon’s Lace Atlantic Circle – Part 5 Scandinavia to Portugal’s Algarve

A zoom video from this years Toronto International Boat Show of Jayne and I talking about our sail down from Norway to Lagos, Portugal.

This season we departed from Wector Yachting near Stathelle, Norway, and sailed to Porsgrunn on May 17th, attending their party & parade for Norwegian National Day.

From Langesund on Norway’s South Coast we crossed to the Syd Koster Islands, on Sweden’s West Coast, spending idyllic days at anchor, as well as riding out a 40-knot blow tied to the rocks of Väderöarna. Swedish midsummer is celebrated with the “dance of the little frogs” at Henån on Orust Island, home of Najad Yachts. Stryso Island in the Gothenburg archipelago made a perfect base to explore Sweden’s second largest city.

We made an easy crossing to Denmark, spending a few days at Copenhagen’s, Langelinie, The Little Mermaid Marina. From Malmo, Sweden we continued south on the Baltic to Kiel, Germany, to transit the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, out to Cuxhaven on the open North Sea. A fair-weather window took us overnight 150 miles to Vlieland, Netherlands in the company of 30 other boats.

We sailed the Waddenzee, Ijsselmeer and Markermeer, then had a few days in Amsterdam’s Sixhaven Marina, that provides easy access downtown by ferry.
Transiting the Dutch Noordzeekanaal, to Ijmuiden took us past the Hoek Van Holland & Rotterdam, Europe’s busiest port. Several long days and nights later we anchored off Cap Gris Nez, France, continuing south on the French side of the English Channel to Cherbourg, Roscoff and Brest.

For 55 hours we enjoyed some easy sailing and battled the wind, waves, and powerful Brittany tides, crossing The Bay of Biscay to Cedeira, on Spain’s Galician Coast. Following Spain’s Costa Da Morte, we round Cabo Finisterre, and from Baiona entered Portuguese waters.

Paralleling the Portuguese coast for 350 miles, we elect to sail in shallow waters, 10-30 metres, watching for Orcas, while avoiding fishing nets and floats. We visit Porto, Figueira Da Foz, Cascais & Lisbon, rounding our final cape of the season, Cabo de São Vicente, to spend the winter living aboard in Portugal’s Algarve region.
