In the middle of the WWII in the Solomon Island, the ground, and in particular the tank battle was fought by US Marines. Nearly 38,000 soldiers were killed in the Solomon Islands between 1942 and 1945, and the campaign proved to be a major turning point in the Pacific War with the Japanese troops’ retreat.
This American Stuart tank lies in the same spot where it was immobilised by Japanese forces on Kohinggo Island in 1943. It is hard to imagine a place like Solomons, with a wild lust rainforest and sandy beaches to be fit tanks. Quite bizarre, isn’t it?
