Whale Sharks Everywhere! A Snorkeling Adventure in Saor Bay – Indonesia

After arriving at the beautiful little island of Satona, we quickly realized that we were not alone. A fishing boat was nestled right next to our anchor, leaving us to navigate carefully around it. As soon as the anchor popped up and left our bow a few meters clear, we were able to set off into Sailor Bay under motor. Sailing Into Sailor Bay The winds and currents made for challenging sailing but our determination led us to find a solution. By putting the Jib away, reefing the main, and using the autopilot, we successfully completed our tack and headed towards our destination – Saor Bay. The Next Morning’s Adventure The excitement grew as the next morning approached, we were picked up at 4 a.m. from our anchorage by a local guide in his small fishing boat. With the pre-dawn light illuminating the surroundings, we arrived at the location where the squid boats gathered. Discovering the Magic of Whale Sharks It’s the bycatch discarded by the squid fishermen that attracts these gentle giants, the whale sharks. As we arrived at the location near the squid boat, only a few lights were on but they provided enough visibility to see multiple wild sharks circling around us. Snorkeling with Whale Sharks The moment of truth arrived – it was time for us to get into the water with these incredible creatures. Karen’s fascination knew no bounds as she watched them circle around her. With first light upon us, we dove into the ocean to swim alongside these majestic animals. An Unforgettable Experience Never in our wildest dreams did we expect to be greeted by so many whale sharks! In our snorkeling adventure, the number of wild sharks we encountered left us absolutely astounded. It was genuinely an experience of a lifetime! The Journey Continues After thoroughly reliving the exhilarating whale shark encounter in our minds, we set sail for Moyo Island, a place known for its breathtaking waterfall system fed by seismic activity from Mount Tambora. Moyo Island The thought of witnessing the remarkable sight of this natural wonder fueled our desire to visit. However, the strong winds and challenging conditions prevented us from taking a 5km hike up to the waterfall due to safety concerns. Sailing On to Lombok Rather than risk our boat, we decided to sail on towards Sambao Island and then proceed to the shores of Lombok. The journey across the 22 nautical miles provided us with a calm night amidst beautiful surroundings. Exploring Lombok With a solid plan to explore more of the stunning island, we pushed on towards Medana Bay Marina. After completing our 25-mile sail against the strong current, we had approximately another 30-35 miles left to travel to our next destination. A Spectacular Experience Throughout this remarkable journey, we have come face-to-face with incredible wildlife encounters and experienced the awe-inspiring beauty of the islands that lie within the vast expanse of Indonesia. As we venture further westward towards Lombok, it only fuels our desire to continue exploring the wonders hidden along these coastlines. Join Us on Our Journey Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness more of these breathtaking moments with Dreamtime Sail.
