Anchored beside shocking destruction in Indonesia - Episode 118

During our first three weeks sailing the coast of Sulawesi we met many, many beautiful, welcoming people and saw nothing but the unbelievable beauty of the world’s eleventh largest island. But in this episode, we finally come face to face with the environmental vandalism of unregulated nickel mining that is spreading throughout Sulawesi like a cancer, destroying paradise and a whole way of life. It’s heartbreaking.
After our wonderful stop at Lasusua, we sail south along the east coast of Sulawesi’s Bone Bay on our way to Bau Bau where we need to renew our visas. On the way we anchor in a large bay by the village of Tambea and experience our first encounter with what proved to be widespread nickel mining we were to discover all over Sulawesi. While we’re all for development that creates employment and improves the lives of the Indonesian people, the devastation caused by these mines operating with no to little environmental controls was very distressing.
