Sailing Vessel Cheeky Monkey set out for Africa but we almost didn’t make it as we find ourselves dodging tankers along the way.

After visiting the ‘real cheeky monkeys’ at the top of Gibraltar Rock, we departed the most southern point of Europe on a cool November morning to sail towards Rabat, Morocco along the western coast of Africa. It was only meant to be a short, easy sail across the Strait of Gibraltar then a straight shot down the coast, but as things go in the sailing world – nothing is ever easy! Here’s just a taste of what we experienced:
– Non-stop cargo ship and ferry traffic crossing our path as sailing vessel Cheeky Monkey made it’s way out of Gibraltar
– Tasha’s difficulty in understanding traffic separation schemes, providing much entertainment to the rest of the crew
– Slamming waves on the hull as we made our way into the Atlantic
– Our first encounter with squalls
– And a very tricky marina entrance once we finally arrived to the beautiful country of Morocco…thanks to Noonsite.com for the helpful tips!
This is our fourth sailing installment since we left Mallorca to start our circumnavigation. At the time we were racing the winter in the Mediterranean, trying to get south before it got too cold. We met up with two friends in Morocco who would complete our Atlantic Crossing crew before we sailed off to the Canary Islands.
This is pure adventure at it’s best: traveling with great friends, encountering stunning wildlife, and having a great time.
