Panama Canal on a Sailboat – Chase the Story 33
Here we come, Pacific Ocean – we’ll be sailing across you soon enough! In this episode we are back in tropical Panama as our catamaran Cheeky Monkey traverses two continents through one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken in the world, the Panama Canal! Near Colon on the Caribbean side of Panama we dodge some of the largest container ships on the planet as we manage to sail and navigate through one of most densely populated shipping channels and anchorages we’ve ever seen.
Cheeky Monkey gets hauled out for the first time since we’ve owned her and we begin a LOT of boat work in the hot and humid Panama sun (lesson learned: never trust a man when he only wants 30 dollars to scrape your hull in Cartagena). AND after a dark and stormy ride up the Panama Canal through the Gatun Locks to the crocodile-infested Lake Gatun and a beautiful sunny ride sailing into the Panama Canal through the Miraflores Locks we make it to the Pacific Ocean!
The crew of Cheeky Monkey went above and beyond for this one and managed to get some of the most amazing photos and videos of taking a sailboat from the Caribbean side of Panama through the Panama Canal and out into the Pacific Ocean that you’ll ever see! Enjoy!
