SSL701 ~ A New Start with an All-Girl Crew
Today marks a very special day, the beginning of a brand new adventure. This time, Captain Rick Moore is setting sail with an all-girl crew after being out of commission for quite some time. As he reveals, “I’ve been out of commission for a while so we haven’t been sailing for the better part of a year.” Yet now, six weeks since his first surgery and restored mobility, it’s finally time to return to the sea.
The Journey Begins
With excitement bubbling over, Captain Rick and his team plan a mission-like first adventure. Their objective? To reach Curaçao in Colombia for the second surgery to potentially correct his voice, an endeavor he is not rushing into anytime soon. With plans set for several weeks of Cruisers College, they eagerly prepare to embark on their journey.
Preparation
To kick off the first day of the trip, many tasks lie ahead including a test run to ensure all is functioning smoothly on their beloved vessel. Among these, engine testing and sail checks must be completed as they prep for departure.
Decked Out for Success
The culmination of years-long dreams, Captain Rick finally achieves the completion of a new wooden cockpit table – an impressive feature not only for lounging around the boat but also during sail time. This major project included a new staircase and additional enhancements.
New Additions and Innovations
In addition to the new table, other noteworthy projects included the creation of specific teak pieces for doors and trim that were custom-made for this endeavor. The crew worked tirelessly on their final varnish coats before setting off.
The Sail Begins
With preparation complete, Captain Rick and the all-female crew embark on their first sailing trip. During their initial night at sea, some were affected by motion sickness but remained positive. Despite this hurdle, spirits stayed high as they navigated their new territory together.
