5 Days Gunkholing The Maine Coast! 5 Sailboats, 85 NM, and the Sturgeon Moon!
Join Green Mountain Josh and me as we take our Morgan 382 on an unforgettable 4-night, 5-day gunkholing cruise from Rockland, Maine, to Pretty Marsh on Mount Desert Island. We sailed about 85 nautical miles through some of the most beautiful waters in Maine — including the Fox Island Thorofare, Deer Isle Thorofare, Jericho Bay, Blue Hill Bay — with stops at places with names straight out of a sailor’s storybook: Stimpson Island, Hell’s Half Acre/Devil Island, Carvers Cove, and Pretty Marsh.
We cruised in company with four other boats: Cape Dory Carlton on his Cape Dory 30, Poppa Kevin (77 years young!) on his Ericson 28, Marcel & Erika on their Island Packet 38 (yes, the same one BoatFools profiled!), and my stepfather aboard his Sabre 36, Moondance.
Highlights included:
- The perfect late-summer weather
- We lost Kevin - but eventually found him
- We saw thousands of dead fish
- The Sturgeon Moon lighting up the anchorages was off the charts
- And we saw countless seals, porpoise, and beautiful boats
- Incredible camaraderie with fellow cruisers - we were just sorry Canadian Ken couldn't make this trip. Next one!
