ALONE OFFSHORE IN THE ATLANTIC and THIS HAPPENED | Sailing in the Gulfstream | Part 2

As Saoirse glides gracefully through the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, we are now 400 nautical miles into our journey from Florida to Rhode Island. All alone, just the two of us and an occasional bird. We are adrift in the Gulf Stream, swaying back and forth, listening to the halyards ding against our mast, the sky is lit with the burnt orange setting sun and then THIS happened.

In the end, the plan of a seamless 900 nautical mile offshore sail, guided by the Gulf Stream’s gracious current, has taken an unexpected turn. A strong northerly wind, poised to intersect near Cape Hatteras, known for its tumultuous conditions, has led us to quickly alter our course. But our temporary harbor reveals an unforeseen challenge—an inlet that will put an end to our thus far peaceful sail.
