Sailing to the Exumas
Join us on this epic sailboat journey from Athol to the breathtaking Exuma Islands in the Bahamas, where we encountered currents, a coral head minefield, and raised our spinnaker for the first time. Experience an unforgettable adventure across Caribbean seas with All Hahns on Deck.
Setting Sail from Athol to the Exumas
We began our journey, navigating carefully through the current cut with precision timing, ensuring a safe passage through its powerful currents. This marked the completion of the first navigational challenge.
Raising the Spinnaker
In perfect weather conditions – Easter Sunday, light winds at 5-6 knots and a beautiful sunny day – we decided to try out our spinnaker for the very first time. With a combination of YouTube research and trial and error, we successfully raised it, resulting in an incredible boost of speed on this part of our journey.
Navigating Through the Coral Head Minefield
The coral head minefield proved to be a more challenging obstacle. As novice sailors, we had to rely heavily on our charts and eyeball navigation for over two hours to safely navigate through these shallow waters filled with hidden obstacles.
Exploring Allen Cay
After successfully passing through the minefield, we reached Allen Key and dropped anchor. The following morning, we explored its stunning beaches, surrounded by exotic wildlife.
The Exuma Islands are truly a boater’s paradise, with crystal clear waters and untouched nature waiting to be discovered. We’re excited to continue our sailing adventure in this beautiful chain of islands!
After spending most of our time in the Abacos and Eleuthera, we finally set sail for the Exumas. It's a magical land that we've heard so much about. We cannot wait to take you there!
Much Love,
Kirstin & Andy
