Preparations
The couple had already set their anchor at Meeks Patch, just outside of Spanish Wells. Before they turned on the boat’s engine and made it loud, they wanted to give viewers a heads up about what they were going to do. The plan was to cross their fingers in hope for a safe journey back to Eleuthera while keeping an open weather window available. The Journey
The night sail was set in motion, and they planned on leaving early around 4 AM. This allowed them enough time to reach their destination while still having the window of opportunity available for their journey back. Despite the marginal weather conditions that made the trip potentially rough, they were determined to make it work. Why Eleuthera?
Eleuthera was an unexpected gem for Andy and Kiren. It proved to be a secluded paradise that many cruisers had not yet discovered. They took the time to explore caves, baths, and other breathtaking sights that the island had to offer before they started their journey back.Decision Time
The 50-mile crossing from Eleuthera to the Abacos was an essential part of their journey. While on their sailboat Magic Dragon, they made important decisions about when to proceed and which routes to take based on the weather conditions and other obstacles.Obstacles and Challenges
Throughout their voyage, Andy and Kiren had to face several challenges including navigating through narrow channels with breaking seas, dodging big ships, and keeping the boat on course while encountering 18 knots of wind. Conclusion
Leaving Eleuthera in the middle of the night proved to be an unforgettable adventure for Andy and Kiren. By taking necessary precautions and making wise decisions along the way, they were able to overcome the challenges posed by the weather and navigate their sailboat through a variety of obstacles successfully. What’s Next?
With Eleuthera now in their rearview mirror, the couple is eager to explore more of the Abacos before they make their way back to the U.S. for hurricane season. Although they’re ready to return stateside to work on their boat, they can’t help but look forward to future journeys back to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. We've been enjoying our first season in the Bahamas. To date, we've explored parts of the Abacos, been enchanted by Eleuthera, and enjoyed the crystal-clear waters of the Exumas. But our season is coming to an end soon, and we have to make our way back north for hurricane season. So, it's time to leave Eleuthera and head back to the Abacos. Hopefully, the 50-mile passage won't be too bad!
Thank you for joining us on the adventure!
