How To Receive Fleet Code and French Polynesian Weather for Free
1) Compose an email to “query@saildocs.com”
2) No subject
3) First line of the message – send fleet.nadi
4) Second line – send fr.poly.en
5) Third line – send nz.wgrm
5) Send
6) Wait a few minutes
7) Check email.
To view the fleet code chart simply drag the fleet code email you receive into the physplot application. Or open the fleet code email and copy/paste the contents of the message into the fleet code plugin for OpenCPN (my favorite way).
We regularly use GRIB files. You can easily obtain GRIBs from a wide variety of sources. Google will help you find the a source that is good for you. We mainly use saildocs underway (via email over HF radio or satellite phone) or the internet when in port. Please remember GRIBs are just a computer prediction and not a synoptic chart prepared by meteorologists. They take some practice to get “good” at knowing what degree of confidence to have in the information for various situations. People often get into trouble when they rely on them too heavily without other information to offer context and help interpret what they show.
