The pesky, dangerous maple that serves as an anchor for the boathouse comes down in this episode, and Steve (who has worked in the past as an arborist, and of course, felled the trees for the lumber in Arabella) goes through a couple of specifics about how to safely drop large limbs from a tree, making them do what you want them to do.
Then we’re back on Arabella, using joggle sticks to create a pattern for the first bulkhead, which will also be the only one to create separate interior space in the boat. This somewhat private arrangement in the forepeak calls for a door, and it’s time to hit the inventory of reclaimed frame and panel mahogany pieces that were salvaged from Victoria to see if anything suits the purpose.
Thanks so much for watching, hope you enjoyed this one! It’s especially important to join our newsletter, we’re going to be launching a few short-run, limited availability things from Arabella herself that will be offered to the newsletter subscribers first.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38′ wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
