The sound gets better at 13:11! Thanks for your patience. We had the mics turned down from the noisy day before, when we were walking around a crowded show grounds.
Steve and Annie B met up with John Harris, owner and CEO of Chesapeake Light Craft www.clcboats.com, to talk tender design and selection. We are looking at the possibilities offered by three different Atkin-designed dinghies, and John helps us think about the type of cruising Steve wants to do, the adventures he wants to have in a sailing and rowing tender, and which design will be the best fit.
We also discuss design alteration and what’s acceptable for changing the building method, length overall (LOA), or other attributes of these designs. We’re thinking about strip-building the Fay at this point.
We also get a look at some vintage books that John has been collecting over time that were published by MotorBoating magazine, a beautiful and informative periodical that offered smart discussions on designs… many from Atkin himself.

At 13:16, Steve and John turn their attention to the Tenderly Dinghy. Annie B wrote a design review about it a couple of years ago, and you can read it here: https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/tenderly/

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38′ wooden boat in Steve’s backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
