Strip building, for us, is cost-effective, materials-conscious, and practical. Where a wooden boat builder might not have wide, clear, stock, this approach would work— but also, hulls are built this way for both strength and affordability. It’s also very repairable, which is important if you’re taking a DIY approach to wooden boat ownership.
All of the superstructures on Arabella will be strip-built, which we show this week. We’re starting to get into “no gluing season” here in the United State’s northeast corner, and so it’s important for us to boogie on these elements that rely on epoxy for their success.
Pretty soon, because of this closing weather window and in an effort to stay warm as we finish interior elements this winter, we will be fiberglassing the cabin trunk and finishing off these pieces. We’ll also be gluing the main mast together. Keep an eye on here during the coming weeks!

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
