Steve and Robin take you rock climbing in Baxter State Park in Maine while KP and Aiden, our summer intern, create and glue up cedar strips to build the cockpit.

The cockpit for this DIY wooden boat, with an eye toward easier maintenance, will be removable as one piece. It’ll be a little like a bath tub, and when lifted off, will give us access to the Nanni Diesel engine, fuel tanks, battery banks, and anything else in that aft section should we want to do major work there.

And as for the Katahdin trip, Steve and Robin are on a mission to link up some routes on a famous rock face in Baxter State Park where there’s a bit of route set here and there, but where perhaps two able and willing folks like them can do something for the mountain climbing community at large. Here’s a taste of what’s to come when we launch Arabella on June 17, 2023. We get so busy building these things we might forget that they’re a vehicle for adventure. Well, some people might forget. We certainly haven’t.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead ballast keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Setting Sail for a 600-Mile Offshore Passage (But Only After a Little Boat Work)
This week, we’re getting ready for a 600-mile offshore passage from Miami, FL to Beaufort, NC. Before we set sail, I took the chance to get some boat work done: scrubbing and oiling the decks, smoothing out the battens so they don’t get stuck in the la...
