Norna Needs a Captain – Episode 192 – Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

After all the fiberglass, foam, and fairing compound from the last few weeks, we get to the pretty stuff for the custom refrigerator (oh heck maybe with a bit more of all of that, too): the drop-in lids are topped with cherry and cherry burl, and they’re made to be snugly dropped into a larger lid that will be hinged.

Also, see how the locust grate for the shower and head came together. Setting the sole in there a bit higher up in the boat allows the sole in there to reach further outboard. The additional horizontal real estate gives good access to move the handle on the side of the solids container. The non-slip surface will feel good on bare feet and drain well.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38′ wooden boat in Steve’s backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
