We’ve been preparing the boat decking for quite some time. Essentially, it’s boat deck flooring, and so will take a lot of wear and tear from above, but unlike house flooring, will need to be beautiful on the underside. To prepare, we milled, sanded, and painted the boat decking materials as one entire batch for consistency in size and appearance.
Boat decking isn’t only a concern for a wooden sailboat such as this one. Fiberglass boats as well as classic wooden boats have laid decks, some straight and some sprung (laid in curves to the shape of the boat). The boat deck flooring on fiberglass boats, of course, is put down on top of the fiberglass and is thinner, more of a veneer for looks. In wooden boat building, a laid deck is one layer, cotton caulked and pitched, with a showy underside that serves as the cabin “ceiling”.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
