All of the milling in the last episode is starting to show its worth as the workbench comes together. The Emmert patternmaker’s vise, which was a generous and beautiful gift from a supporter, will be just aft of center to make the best use of both the bench’s surface and the vise’s clamping capabilities.
Maybe we dip a little deep into the process to make this bench, but it’s such an important piece of interior furniture for Arabella, made with a mixture of some of the loveliest and most storied wood we have, that will provide a working surface that’s extremely useful even before it’s completed. It will speed up the work on the interior, eliminating the need to carry pieces up and down from the shed’s benches to work on them. We also suspect that there’s a lot of you out there who might want to build a workbench even if you don’t intend to build a boat around it.
We have deep, deep gratitude for so many people for episode 181. Thanks to Wes, who spent so much quality time with Steve planning and executing the bench, getting up early every day, and working the whole time through with passion and good spirits. Turns out, he’s a goofball and has become a dear friend. Thanks to our supporter for the vise, who was tickled pink last week to see their father’s very useful and much appreciated tool receive a place of pride in Arabella.
And finally, thanks to everyone who has pre-purchased a t-shirt through Bonfire for this current fundraising campaign. As Steve said, we have nearly enough for our sail material, and we’re hoping to go all the way with the funds for the standing rigging.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38′ wooden boat in Steve’s backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
