Self-Drive Sunwapta Class III Whitewater Rafting

Take on the Sunwapta River, Jasper’s thrilling Class 3 whitewater adventure. With a steep gradient and fast, continuous whitewater, the Sunwapta delivers rapid after rapid of exciting action. Located entirely within Jasper National Park, you’ll leave the highway behind and experience the Canadian Rockies from river level, surrounded by mountains, forest and wilderness you simply can’t experience from the road. In a small paddle raft, everyone gets involved. This self-drive option is ideal for travelers exploring the Icefields Parkway or journeying between Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff. Meet right at the river, leave your vehicle at the take-out and, once your rafting adventure is over, continue your road trip or explore nearby highlights at your own pace. No previous rafting experience is required.

Important Information

• This is a SELF-DRIVE tour and does not include transportation from Jasper. Meet at the Sunwapta River take-out, approximately 350 m south of Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge. Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6Nx5yMvenzw5mneV6.
• Arrive parked and ready 15 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time and wait for the Maligne Rafting branded bus. Other rafting operators may also be present, so please look for the Maligne Rafting bus when it arrives.
• Trips depart on schedule and cannot wait for late arrivals. Allow extra travel time and review or save directions before setting out. Cell service is extremely limited along the Icefields Parkway and non-existent at the meeting location.
• Your vehicle remains at the take-out. Our bus will transfer you upstream to the put-in, and you will raft back to where your vehicle is parked.
• Wear a swimsuit under your clothing and bring a towel and warm clothes for afterwards. We also recommend a drink and snack for after the trip.
• Trips run in all weather. We provide wetsuits, splash jackets, neoprene booties, helmets and life jackets, plus additional neoprene layers when needed.
• On cooler days, bring a fleece or wool layer to wear under your splash jacket. Do not wear cotton on the river.
• Participants must be at least 12 years old and weigh a minimum of 90 lbs (41 kg). Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
• All departure times are in Alberta Mountain Time.
• Minimum numbers apply. If a trip is cancelled due to insufficient numbers, you will be offered an alternative or full refund.
• Boat configuration is determined by raft guides based on group size. While every effort is made to keep groups together, this cannot be guaranteed.
