If you’ve been watching the Americas Cup you’ll have heard this term.
VMG or velocity made good measures how quickly you are progressing directly upwind or downwind.
It is a compromise between the angle sailed and the speed of the boat
Optimal VMG will get you from A to B in the shortest time.
On a reaching course where you can sail directly to your target we are not concerned with VMG, just boatspeed.
If we sail more directly to our target, upwind or downwind, we sail slower but will travel less distance
If we sail less directly we’ll sail faster but will be covering more distance
