Last summer we realized that the best way for us to pay off student debt would be to become minimalists and build a tiny house. Soon after, we bought a 24 ft short school bus, ripped out the seats and built a tiny house inside. Our conversion took us six weeks of intensive labor but it was well worth the time and effort. We love our skoolie tiny house and we love living the van life.
We knew about the tiny house movement before our build, but didn’t realize at that point how huge the van life movement is or how quickly the skoolie movement is growing. We are so grateful to be part of such a fun, loving and involved community.
Building our home was a period of immense growth. We grew new muscles, new skills, new love for each other and a new appreciation for our home and our few belongings. We anticipated the move from our 1100 sq ft apartment into our 115 sq ft tiny house to be somewhat difficult – to our surprise, it wasn’t. We didn’t miss our space or our material things. Instead we found ourselves happier and closer to nature and of course each other. The place in our lives where “things” use to be has been filled with experiences instead.
We have lived in our short school bus full time for 6 months now and we love everything about it. Well…. almost everything, but we’ll get into that another time.
