i now got a good idea of how to deal with the long rope and chain for the hawse tail and how to get space in the cockpit.
I will not use a drum winch as was the first plan. There was not space for it and to put it on the deck is not good seamanship. There its center of gravity would be much higher. It would create wind resistance. It would be in the way. It would look ugly. I know cruising boats put all things on the deck but that does not justify bad behavior.
The drum winch would have solved the problem of the rope – chain joint or linkage.
Ordinary sheet winches do not handle chain. My idea is to make a rubber drum either of pulyurethan if I can get hold of suitable material or cut out disks of a tire and put them together intil it get high enough. The ratchet is not difficult and a ratchet handle can be gotten in a hardware store there are even sprakfree ones of beryllium that do not corrode.
This is the plan. This problem I now hope to be solved. It is in sequence so it will have to wait for a good time maybee even to after the first sea trials.
