Light Wind Racing Mixed Fleet Tornado Catamarans

Racing the Tornado – Light Wind

It’s Joe from JoyRider TV here, and today we are bringing you some exciting footage from a light wind racing day in Vassiliki Bay, Greece. This is part of Wildwind Race Day, where sailors gather to race their catamarans. In this video, we are out on board Bad Boy 94, introducing our new crew, Ben, who will be joining us for the upcoming Tornado World Championships.

Racing Strategy

The strategy in Vassiliki Bay, particularly when sailing with an onshore wind, is fairly simple. The wind is generally better to the left, but it can go a bit light if you try going right. Ben, who has recently taken over as crew from JoJo and managed some time at Wildwind for work experience years ago, explains that we need to beat the Hobie Tigers by 6% or 3 minutes in a typical race duration.

The Tornado Catamarans

This exciting race sees a mixed fleet of Tornado catamarans competing against the Hobie Tigers, making for an interesting and fast-paced match. In this instance, we’re also using it as an opportunity to test out our gear ahead of the World Championships.

The Course

In this light wind scenario, you can see that we’re tacking very close to the boat and managing the jib throughout the race. Our goal is always to be as efficient as possible while navigating the challenging winds.

Jibe Technique

The Jibe is crucial in maintaining speed and overall boat performance. Here, we are seen practicing our Jibes while ensuring a smooth transition from one direction to the next.

Drop Technique

In this video, we’re also showcasing our drop technique. When sailing in these conditions, it’s essential to ensure that the process is as smooth and efficient as possible, so we’re sharing a few tips on how best to handle it.

Adapting to Changing Conditions

The crew demonstrates skill and experience as they adapt their tactics according to the ever-changing conditions. Their ability to read the wind and make split-second decisions showcases their talent and expertise in this demanding sport.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, this light wind racing experience is an excellent way to sharpen our skills, enjoy the beautiful scenery of Vassiliki Bay in Greece, and spend quality time with friends and colleagues alike. Keep following JoyRider TV for more exciting sailing content!

Going All In on the Start! | Hobie 16 International Finals Day 2

After repeated delays at the Hobie 16 International Championships, Race Officer Mark Santorelli finally sent us onto the water when the breeze shifted into the southeast. With just 3–6 knots of light, variable wind, we made a high-risk decision: start on port tack and try to reach the right-hand si...

Hobie 16 Championships | Protect Your Boat with Forward Sailing

How should you protect your Hobie 16 when you’re not sailing? For regular summer use, a tramp cover may be enough. For longer periods ashore, full hull covers provide considerably more protection. The Hardest Race I’ve Ever Sailed | Hobie 16 International Day 3

Day 3 of the Hobie 16 International Championships delivered one of the most difficult races I’ve ever sailed. We launched into two exciting port-tack starts, but the first race didn’t go to plan. I completely misread the shifting breeze and we finished near the back of the fleet. Race two was a co...

Full Power, Fast & Loose! | Hobie 16 International Day 2

Day 2 of the Hobie 16 International Championships—and we finally unleashed some serious speed! The opening start was abandoned after a huge wind shift, but when racing restarted, Laura and I committed to the port end and launched into a full-power, double-trapeze battle.
