Oops, Size Does Matter; s4/e19
In my way to the city Breda, I had some things to do so I moored in Waddinxveen (s4/e18) and when I was ready I left to stay the night at a mooring facility in Gouda. Close to Gouda I dared myself with that one question: will I be able to pass with the mast up?

The 4 camera's I use to produce my outdoor footage, are so called PTZ - P(an) T(ilt) Z(oom). Zoom, I only use on the rear camera, when I am underway. As you have seen I use the pan and tilt a lot. And in the dark they produce a great (short view) infrared image. I even can navigate in a marina at night on my cams.
Since they all are so called "IP camera's", each have an unique (hardwired) IP address (no DNS) in my network.

Oops, Size Does Matter; s4/e19
This channel follows a format: "Join Henk-Jan, whilst he cruises on motorvessel Lady Liselot through The Netherlands and a little further". That's it. This automatically means: no boat tour and no boat jobs. These subjects do not fit the format. So, I aim to give you a feel for what life's like aboard for me and hope you enjoy it, perhaps relate to it or maybe even learn something. But it's simply my story and the way I do things. Nothing more, nothing less.

Waarom ik alles in het Engels doe?
Omdat ik video's kijk van Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers én heel veel Engelstaligen die allemaal Engels lullen en ook bootjesmensen / liveaboards zijn. Want alleen dan kan je je ervaring wereldwijd delen. En wat blijkt? Mijn video's worden in 127 landen bekeken (zie S03/E01 voor de lijst). Veel van mijn kijkers en abonnees zijn Engelstaligen die mijn video's helemaal top vinden, omdat ze óf familie hebben uit Nederland, of hier jaren geleden zijn geboren en door omstandigheden nu elders op de wereld wonen. En, dat ik dan Engels spreek met een accentje (net als de Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers overigens) dan interesseert hen dat helemaal niets.
Weet je dat Nederlandse ondertiteling aan kan zetten? Doorgaans zo'n 4 uur nadat de video is gepubliceerd. Klik op de video, en kies uit de iconen die rechtsonder verschijnen dan voor [ondertiteling] en kies daar voor Nederlands. Dan wordt zelfs mijn steenkolen Engels (knap he van die jongens en meisjes YouTube) vertaald naar Nederlandsch.

Sailing the canals of the Netherlands with a large boat might seem daunting due to the country’s low bridges. However, experienced sailor Hanan has mastered the art of safely navigating through these narrow passages. Join us as we embark on this exciting journey and learn how size doesn’t have to be an issue when planning your tour.
The Challenge
Many of the bridges in the Netherlands are fixed at a height of 4 meters, which can make it difficult for larger boats. Even with modifications, reaching this required height isn’t always possible. Hanan had initially doubted his ability to pass through one particular bridge during his Brea tour due to these limitations.
The Solution
Fortunately, Hanan discovered that he could actually go to Bera because the bridges in question are able to open up for boats his size. If not, then at least he can drop the mast and pass under it because of its height, being 530 centimeters tall.
The Journey
Equipped with 400 liters already used, Hanan had a remaining capacity of 2000 liters in his tanks at that moment. This provided an additional depth, which could have potentially allowed him to pass through the bridge with the mast up.
The Bridge
Determined to try, Hanan asked his crew if they wanted to join him upstairs when attempting this maneuver. He carefully loaded the VHF radio, camera setup, and everything else onboard while making sure nothing hindered their progress.
The Rain
Just as they began, it started raining – typical Dutch weather, and it seemed fitting for this adventure. The bridge operator made the call to prepare for an open bridge.
The Attempt
Hanan braced himself and cautiously approached the bridge, unsure if it would fit. “Slowly,” he warned, “we’ll soon find out.” Unfortunately, it did not fit – much to everyone’s disappointment.
The Result
Hanan had no choice but to lower the mast. The crew stayed vigilant, monitoring the situation while expressing excitement and nerves about the entire event.
What a Journey!
The team continued onwards, making their way through bridges and locks while overcoming challenges along the way. This journey was filled with excitement, rain, camaraderie, and valuable lessons on boat sizes, canal heights, and navigational techniques.
The Conclusion
Hanan learned that size does indeed matter when navigating low bridges. However, with careful planning and consideration of all factors such as boat height, depth, and bridge clearances, he successfully conquered the Dutch waterways. By staying vigilant and adapting strategies if needed (such as lowering masts), sailors can also overcome these challenges.
The Final Thoughts
If you find yourself facing similar navigation hurdles in the future, remember Hanan’s experiences and apply them to your journey. No matter what size your boat may be, with determination and a good plan, any waterscape is conquerable!
