How To Add A Haulout To The Refit Mix | Boat Refit Documentary Part 13

Join us for the completion of the last boat work project for the year!
And what a year it's been.
In 2021 we have:

✅ Stripped, sanded and re-varnished the holly and teak floor in the saloon
✅ Removed, leak-proofed, rebuilt and re-installed all the port light trims
✅ Stripped, sanded and re-varnished all the removable timber fixtures from the saloon, galley and nav station
✅ Re-clad all the bulkheads and cabinetry in the saloon, galley and nav station (mostly with imitation teak Laminex)
✅ Re-varnished all the fixed timber in the saloon, galley and nav station
✅ Re-bedded all the stanchions and about 90% of the deck fittings
✅ Replaced 90% of the sheets and furling lines (that's sailing ropes for the landlubbers!)
✅ Stripped, sanded and re-varnished all the external timber forward of the aft cabin
✅ Stripped, sanded and re-varnished all the cockpit timbers
✅ Added a Kapten Boat Collar to the tinny, and had a custom-built cover made by Whitsunday Ocean Services - https://www.whitsundayoceanservices.com.au
✅ Repaired and repainted the entire cockpit
✅ Made modifications to the spray dodger and bimini set-up (thanks to Ullman Sails Whitsunday - https://whitsunday.ullmansails.com)
✅ Added new sheet bags and a new staysail (also thanks to Ullman)
✅ Had new cockpit cushions made (thanks Theresa!)
✅ Re-wired the entire boat! (Thanks to Michael & Kris from Ion Marine Electrical - https://www.ionmarine.com.au/services)
✅ Beefed up the battery cables
✅ Installed a new charger-inverter
✅ Installed a new, stainless steel stove surround (with help from Airlie Beach Welding and fabrication - https://www.airliewelding.com.au/services)
✅ Installed new upholstery in the saloon and nav station (thanks to Mark at Elite Marine Trimming)
✅ Hauled out for minor keel and hull repairs + routine antifoul - using a primer by International Yacht Paints (https://www.international-marine.com), antifoul by Carboline (https://www.carboline.com) and Propspeed (https://propspeed.com). The haulout was possible with help from the fantastic team at Hawkes Boatyard in the Coral Sea Marina (https://hawkesboatyard.com https://www.coralseamarina.com) and Dan from Whitsunday Diesel & Marine (https://www.wsdiesel.com.au)

(Please note: none of the above are sponsored or endorsements - they're just the particular services and trades we chose to use and had a good experience with)

Today, the last fittings are going into a newly replaced headliner in the saloon and work on the cap rail is continuing, but that, as they say my friends, is "another story for another time"...

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see one of my long-term idols in person, a...

WAY COOL! How to custom-build a portable fridge/freezer into a cruising yacht

What do you do when there’s no ‘off-the-shelf solution to a problem on your boat? Well, if you’re anything like us, you design and build one yourself! After spending an unexpected and extended amount of time fixing the hull-to-deck join, bulwark, scuppers and caprail, it’s been nice to move back inside Brilliant II to continue the interior refit. Next on the list has been our “Hobbit Hole”, or as it’s known to the folks outside Middle Earth, the...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the bulwark – which was a process in itself – some of...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbit hole that there’s no turning back and you just have ...
