Ep15 To Brighton.
This trip made us realise how small a boat can feel in the middle of the English Channel, sailing in a storm, that literally could finish the trip off in a flash of light....But lets start at the Beginning:
We left Royal Ramsgate Marina with good weather, sunny with just the right amount of wind and in the right direction. There was a forecast for thunderstorms closer to Brighton but they had also been forecast at Ramsgate for the last two days, with nothing coming of it while we were there, so we made the decision to carry on with our plan of leaving.
As the night rolled in the storm that I was tracking on the weather radar started to get closer and I could see it on the horizon, slowly moving across in front of us from the French coast to the English coast. At one point it was going to miss us. After the third check of the weather, it had dropped south and was heading straight for us. I had time to start the engine, drop the sails and get dressed in heavy weather gear before the rain started and the wind switched 180 degrees straight on the nose. At this point I could not see a great deal, except for a big heavy cloud all around us with flashes of lightning coming from it. Then it was like something from a movie we cleared the cloud to reveal fork lighting hitting the sea in front and to both sides of us. With the really high chance of being hit, I sat as far away from the metal of the boat as possible. As I talked myself down I noticed that the wind had drop to nothing and the rain was so heavy that the sea around the boat had been flattened. As the storm left behind us I had the rest of the trip to Brighton to reflect on ifs and what's of that storm.
Morning broke to reveal a wet and cloudy overcast day. We had missed the tide window to get in to the marina so we anchored just east of the marina to grab some sleep and wait for the tide.
Once in the marina we spent the next few days exploring our lively new home. The girls went wild swimming, we went on the pier and accidentally ended up on a nudist beach.
After a few day of getting up to speed with Brighton's busy fast pace, We all enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the City.
