Nowadays most cruisers sail around with a lot of ballast. There is a cheaper, more gentle way and that is to use boyancy to get rightning moment at large angles of heel. It air does not cost anything. It weighs nothing. As it does not make the boat heavy. It makes for a boat with little resistance. A boat with little resistance need not much sail area. The boat will have shallow draft. That increases the cruising ground manyfold.
Boyancy instead of ballast is an option for the unhurried yachtsman.
