A group of ‘adventurous’ Russians chartered ‘Monster Project’, a VO70, to do this year’s race. Their other adventures have included Everest Base Camp, skidoos in the Russian Arctic and swimming with white sharks in Belize. They were led by Rodion Luka, a former world champion 49er, who had also been part of the crew for the boat when it raced in the 2008/9 Volvo Ocean Race. They found the light wind element challenging but finished a very creditable two hours, only, behind the two other professionally crewed VO70’s – Team SCA and Abu Dhabi.
